Project 2-Innovation Research

Overview

The purpose of this project is to gain first hand experience with innovation by researching, developing and refining a Business Model based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
These devices are disrupting all industries, and are behind Ring doorbells, Nest thermostats, home automation systems, security systems and industrial IoT-Internet of Things-projects.
They can also contain related equipment such as microcontrollers, sensors, breadboards and actuators.
The aim is to investigate the application of technology to various projects.
Students will choose to participate in either manufacturing applications, or home automation to improve living conditions.
You will investigate various applications of this technology, and routes to commercialization.

Step 1: Submit Business Model Problem/Topic

Use your Problem Submission Form to create a brief synopsis of the proposed problem/topic/model on which you will be working.

(50) Each student must complete a Problem Submission form-see D2L for due date


Step 2: Part 1-Submit Initial Business Model Canvas

Each student must create and submit an initial Business Model Canvas.

Use this template as your guide, or another similar one of your choosing, print it as a .pdf file.

During Part 1, which goes from 8/24 to 9/30/21you are expected to work and communicate with Will Kitchen, community partners and Professor Paulson, in order to develop your initial Business Model Canvas.
This means emailing and conducting face to face meetings with partners, as necessary.
Document any concerns you may have.

A blank template has been included in the Project 2 Git file distribution.

(100) Each student must submit a .pdf file to the D2L Assignment Folder "Project02 Initial Business Model Canvas"-see D2L for due date


Step 3: Part 1-Submit Progress report

Create a brief statement of your work to date.
What you have accomplished.
What information you still need.
What work remains to be done.
A brief statement of your plan on completing the work.

Fill out your progress report using the template, then save it as a .pdf file.
Each student must submit a progress report.

A blank template has been included in the Project 2 Git file distribution.

(100) Each student must upload a copy of their completed Progress Report to the D2L Assignment Folder, "Project02 Progress Report"- see D2L for due date


Step 4: Part 2-Develop Draft Report

Submit a draft of your group's research detailing your work to date, and preliminary findings. Use Microsoft Word.
All documents must be saved as pdf files, and combined into one pdf file-which is then uploaded to the D2L Assignment Folder.

During Part 2, which goes from 10/1 to 11/11/2021 you are expected to work and communicate with business partners to continue refining your Business Model Canvas.
This means emailing and conducting face to face meetings with partners, as necessary.

A blank template has been included in the Project 2 Git file distribution.

(200) Each student must upload a copy of their completed Draft Research report to the D2L Assignment Folder, "Project02 Draft Report"-see D2L for due date


Step 5: Part 3-Deliver Final Report

Report Guidelines:
Your final report must summarize your successes, failures, and lessons learned.
It must contain a copy of your final Business Model Canvas.
A blank template has been included in the Project 2 Git file distribution.
All documents in the final report must be saved as pdf files, and combined into one pdf file-which is then uploaded to the D2L Assignment Folder.

During Part 3, which goes from 11/12 to 12/2/2021 you are expected to work and communicate with your partners to finalize your Business Model Canvas.
This means emailing and conducting face to face meetings with partners, as necessary.

A blank template has been included in the Project 2 Git file distribution.

(300) Each student must upload a copy of their completed Final Report, including the final Business Model Canvas, as one .pdf to the D2L Assignment Folder, "Project02 Final Report"-see D2L for due date


Statement on Intellectual Property and Business Interactions

 

Corporate interaction:
You are expected to behave in a professional, business-like manner in all dealings for this project.
Make sure you are dressed appropriately, in business casual attire, when you meet with any of the people associated with this project.

When working with your business be guided by the statement 'Do No Harm'!!
This project involves working with real world organizations. These organizations are contributing their personnel, data, knowledge and other resources to this project. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain experience with how organizations depend on innovation. If you perform well enough, the organization you work with may be willing to provide you with a letter of reference, very valuable when looking for employment. You are expected to be professional in all dealings with these organizations and their personnel.
Intellectual Property Rights:
By participating in this project each student agrees to give a royalty free, non-exclusive right to any creative work produced during this project to the collaborating partner. You will be expected to provide a copy of requested work product to the collaborating partner by the last day of class.

Also please realize that you may be required to sign a Non-disclosure or confidentiality agreement.

If you do not agree with these terms, please contact the professor as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made.
